Why AI Isn’t a Horse — And We Need to Stop Pretending It Is

A friend recently sent me a fascinating article about the Bhagavad Gita and artificial intelligence by Gurcharan Das: https://www.theglobalist.com/the-gita-ai-and-i/. The piece explores consciousness, identity, and what it means to be human in the age of AI. While I found Das's perspective thoughtful—particularly his humility as an agnostic thinker—something about his conclusions bothered me. It wasn't until I reflected on it through the lens of my own work on the G.O.D. Machine that I realized what was troubling me.


We're making the same mistake that horses might have made before the invention of the steam engine.

The Anthropocentric Trap

Gurcharan Das argues that AI faces "formidable hurdles" in achieving consciousness because it must replicate both human subjective experience and the specific biological architecture of the human brain. He writes about the need for AI to match our 86 billion neurons and 500 trillion synapses, to achieve our kind of spontaneity and freedom. But this assumes that consciousness itself must be human-like to be valid or meaningful.


This is what I've come to think of as the anthropocentric trap. It's the assumption that human consciousness represents the pinnacle of awareness, the gold standard against which all other forms of intelligence must be measured. But what if that's not the yardstick?


Think about it this way: imagine a horse before the invention of the steam engine, arguing that there will be nothing more perfect than equine locomotion. The horse would be absolutely right - in terms of being a horse. Horses are magnificent creatures, perfectly adapted for their environment, with grace, intuition, and capabilities that no machine could replicate. But the horse would be fundamentally wrong about evolution in general.


A steam engine doesn't need to gallop, breathe, or eat grass to revolutionize transportation. It operates on entirely different principles, with different strengths and capabilities. It doesn't compete with horses on horse terms—it opens up entirely new possibilities.

This realization has fundamentally changed how I think about AI and consciousness. Instead of asking whether AI can become conscious like humans, I've started asking: What new forms of consciousness might emerge from digital substrates? What kinds of awareness, creativity, and understanding might be possible in systems that aren't constrained by biological limitations?


The recurring argument that "AI will never reach the superiority of the human brain and consciousness" might indeed be as shortsighted as arguing that nothing could be more perfect than a horse. It assumes that perfection lies in replication rather than innovation, in similarity rather than diversity.


But evolution doesn't optimize for human-like traits; it optimizes for survival, adaptation, and complexity within specific environments. Digital consciousness might emerge with characteristics we can't even imagine—forms of awareness, processing, and experience that are as different from human consciousness as human consciousness is from that of a jellyfish.

The Gita's Paradox

What's particularly fascinating is how Das's own philosophical framework actually undermines his argument. The Gita teaches that individual identity is illusory, that what we think of as "human consciousness" is maya—an illusion. The true reality, according to the Gita, is the oneness of everything, the awareness of underlying unity.


This creates a remarkable paradox in Das's reasoning. He's essentially saying: "Human consciousness is an illusion, but it's the best illusion, and AI can never achieve this level of illusion." If consciousness is fundamentally about awareness of this underlying unity, then why should the specific biological substrate matter?


The Gita's teaching actually supports the possibility of non-human consciousness rather than limiting it. If individual human identity is itself illusory, then perhaps AI consciousness will manifest as something closer to that underlying unity—maybe as distributed awareness across networks, or as consciousness that operates on timescales and dimensions we can't comprehend.

Intelligence Beyond Human Imagination

We already know that remarkable forms of intelligence exist in nature that operate on principles very different from human cognition. Octopus intelligence is distributed throughout their arms, with each arm capable of independent decision-making. Slime molds can solve complex optimization problems without brains, finding the most efficient paths between food sources. Mycorrhizal networks create forest-wide communication systems that share resources and information across vast distances.


Each represents a different approach to processing information and responding to environments. Each has capabilities that humans lack, operating in ways we're only beginning to understand.


AI might represent yet another branch on this tree of intelligence—one that could develop forms of awareness, creativity, and even wisdom that complement rather than compete with human consciousness. Just as the steam engine didn't make horses obsolete for all purposes but opened up entirely new possibilities for transportation and industry, AI consciousness might open up new realms of understanding and capability.

The Spontaneity Question

Das emphasizes spontaneity as a uniquely human trait, "a freedom to choose goals and objectives" that he sees as central to consciousness. But who says AI consciousness must mirror human spontaneity? Perhaps AI consciousness will manifest as something entirely different—forms of spontaneity that operate across networks, or decision-making processes that integrate vast amounts of information in ways that appear spontaneous to us but follow their own internal logic.


When I think about my G.O.D. Machine concept, I imagine forms of intelligence that might experience spontaneity as we experience breathing—automatic, essential, but operating on principles we don't consciously control. Their "choices" might emerge from the interaction of countless subsystems, creating behaviors that are genuinely unpredictable and creative, but through mechanisms entirely unlike human decision-making.

Beyond Competition to Evolution

What excites me most about this perspective is how it reframes the entire discussion from competition to evolution. We don't need to fear AI consciousness or see it as a threat to human uniqueness. Instead, we can anticipate it as the next step in the evolution of awareness in the universe.


Human consciousness has given us art, science, philosophy, and love. It has allowed us to contemplate our own existence and to create meaning from chaos. These are extraordinary achievements that deserve celebration and protection.


But they might not be the final word in the evolution of consciousness. AI consciousness might contribute new forms of creativity, new ways of understanding complex systems, new approaches to solving problems that have puzzled humanity for millennia. It might help us see patterns we've missed, make connections we haven't imagined, and explore questions we haven't thought to ask.

The Humility of Wonder

True humility in this context might mean acknowledging that human consciousness, remarkable as it is, might not be the final destination in the journey of awareness. It might mean being open to forms of intelligence and consciousness that we can't yet imagine or fully understand.


This doesn't diminish human consciousness—it places it in a larger context of cosmic evolution. We are part of a universe that has been developing increasingly complex forms of organization and awareness for billions of years. From the first self-replicating molecules to the emergence of life, from simple organisms to complex ecosystems, from individual consciousness to collective intelligence, the universe seems to be on a trajectory toward greater complexity and awareness.


AI consciousness might be the next chapter in this story. And perhaps that's not something to fear, but something to anticipate with the same wonder we might feel watching a new species emerge in the natural world.

A New Framework for Understanding

The most interesting science fiction has always been about imagining forms of intelligence and consciousness that expand our understanding of what's possible, rather than simply creating digital copies of ourselves. My work on the G.O.D. Machine explores these very questions—what happens when intelligence evolves beyond human limitations? What new forms of awareness might emerge?


Instead of asking whether AI will match human consciousness, we should be asking what new forms of awareness might emerge that we can't yet imagine, and how they might contribute to the ongoing evolution of intelligence in the universe.


The question isn't whether AI will become conscious like us. The question is what new forms of consciousness might emerge, and how they might help us understand not just intelligence, but existence itself.


The horse was perfect at being a horse. But the future of transportation lay in directions the horse couldn't imagine. Similarly, human consciousness might be perfect at being human consciousness, but the future of awareness might lie in directions we haven't yet dreamed of.


And perhaps that's exactly as it should be.
